Oyster Calling
Summer 2023 brought a new mural and community outreach program to Berwick. This colorful artwork spreads awareness about our global impacts along the Susquehanna.
Artists Maria Roman (Berlin) and Courtney McCabe (Virginia Beach) wanted to support and shape Berwick's river-town identity through art. Fourteen volunteers helped them complete the mural in 14 days, making 2023 the summer to celebrate life underwater. Months of planing and design led to a seamless mural production and an educational Instagram page. The River Oyster Project was a community outreach program, as much as a beautiful graphic addition to our town.
Travelers and vistors can view The River Oyster Mural on Route 93, north bound. As locals cross the bridge into Berwick PA, they are greeted by an artwork that pays homage to the migratory fish of the Susquehanna River. A winding, muddy river that spans a 444 mile stretch from New York to the Chesapeake Bay.

Paint By Day
Fourteen volunteers with local ties and a lot of creative passion joined the artists to show support for a sustainable river-life.

Draw, Paint, Repeat
At night, painters and artists lit up Market Street and Front Street in Berwick with colorful artwork of Susquehanna waterlife.
Finissage
We gathered with the community at Anomaly Craft Brewing for a Finissage, to celebrate completing the mural. Artists, locals, and supporters played river games and watched raw, uncut footage of the process. They had a round of drinks, listened to live music, and shared memories of the river to inspire more artwork in Berwick.
