I chose to be involved with the Berwick Arts Association because I believe in the power of the arts to strengthen and uplift our community. Serving in this role gives me the opportunity to give back in a meaningful way and help ensure that creative opportunities remain accessible to everyone. I’ve always felt that art brings people together, sparks new ideas, and improves the quality of life for all of us.
I have a strong interest in seeing more live music available in our community—it's one of the most immediate and joyful ways people can connect, share culture, and create lasting memories. I’m proud to support an organization that values those experiences and works to make them a regular part of life in Berwick.

I left Berwick in 1981 and went on to a 40-year journalism career that included covering the White House and a second career as an award-winning bluegrass songwriter. Now that we have returned home, I see serving on the board of the Berwick Arts Association as a way to give back to the community that shaped me on every step of my journey. I was pleasantly surprised by the way Berwick grew and changed in the years I was away. Much of that improvement was tied to the arts, including the incredible murals, the Coffeehouse Music Series and renovations to the Berwick Theater. And many of those things were connected to an organization that didn’t exist when I was growing up here, the Berwick Arts Association. As the organization’s treasurer and chair of the Music Committee, I look forward to contributing in any way I can to make my hometown even more vibrant, exciting and welcoming through visual arts, performing arts and writing. The board’s job is to Make Art Happen. I believe in the mission so strongly that I recently had those three words tattooed on my right forearm.

I have always felt that art, creativity in all genre, is most important, often unnoticed in the fast pace of daily life. It is when we slow the pace, smell the roses, listen to the music, and drink in beautyvall around us that our souls are peaceful.

I personally believe that Art predates humankind, however, my favorite Art is human made, and I have been especially enjoying the quality Art works made by some talented humans in Berwick, PA.
The importance of Art is infinite, because without it, it would be a vile bleak existence.

I joined the BAA because I was lucky enough to have a firsthand experience of the grassroots of Berwick Arts, and now I get to see and help my hometown bloom with art for years to come.

I’m lucky to have found the amazing community of passionate artists and enthusiasts that is the Berwick Arts Association! A Washington DC native, I’ve lived in Berwick for over 30 years. I can’t draw, and I can hardly read my own handwriting, but I do love to write romances and share stories. I’ve published two Regency-era romance books so far, to the chagrin of my three boys, and hope that more will follow. But more importantly, I hope that more murals, and art installations, and concerts and celebrations are ahead for Berwick due to the efforts of the BAA!
All the best,
Julie
